We had the pleasure of staying at this wonderful hotel when we last visited Prague. It could not have been in a better location nestled at the foot of the famous Charles Bridge, it was so convientent when walking to most of the famous landmarks.
Tucked away in the heart of Prague’s historic center, Hotel U Tri Pstrosu (At the Three Ostriches) stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural heritage. This iconic hotel has been a beacon of hospitality for centuries, welcoming travelers and dignitaries alike with its unique blend of charm and elegance.
A Humble Beginning
The hotel’s history dates back to 1597, when the original building was constructed on the pier of the Judith Bridge, which was later destroyed by a flood ¹. The house was rebuilt by Jan Fux, a feather merchant who sold ostrich plumes, a highly sought-after commodity at the time. Fux’s business acumen and flair for marketing led him to commission a colorful advertisement featuring three ostriches, which adorned the facade of his establishment ².
A Hub of Hospitality
Over the centuries, Hotel U Tri Pstrosu has played host to numerous notable figures, including Charles IV, the Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor, who allegedly visited the premises during the construction of the Charles Bridge ³. The hotel’s reputation as a hub of hospitality was further solidified in 1714, when Deodat Ramajan, an Armenian merchant, opened the first coffee house in Bohemia within the hotel’s walls ¹.
Restoration and Revival
Despite its rich history, Hotel U Tri Pstrosu suffered from neglect and disrepair over the years. However, in the 1970s, a major restoration project was undertaken to revive the hotel to its former glory ². The project involved the careful reconstruction of the original building, including the preservation of its stunning Renaissance ceilings and the restoration of its historic facade.
Modern-Day Luxury
Today, Hotel U Tri Pstrosu boasts 18 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, each equipped with modern amenities, including satellite TV, mini-bar, and internet connection ⁴. Guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the Charles Bridge and the Vltava River from the comfort of their rooms or from the hotel’s charming restaurant, which serves up delicious Czech and international cuisine.
